The Ornery Goods Espresso Martini

The Ornery Goods Espresso Martini

A good fire with a good drink

We didn't invent this recipe. We found it on Epicurious a few months ago and haven't made it any other way since. The difference is the coffee.

What you need

  • 1.5oz coffee liqueur — Mr. Black
  • 1oz espresso, cooled — make this first, add it last
  • 1oz vodka
  • 0.5oz Amaro Nonino
  • 1.5oz Grand Marnier — technically optional, not actually optional
  • Pinch of salt
  • Ice for shaking
  • A coupe or martini glass, chilled if you planned ahead

How to make it

Pull your espresso first and set it aside to cool. If you didn't plan ahead — and we rarely do — leftover coffee works fine. Cold brew works. Whatever good coffee you have.

Once the espresso is cooled add everything to a shaker with ice — coffee liqueur, espresso, vodka, Amaro Nonino, Grand Marnier, and a pinch of salt. If your espresso is still hot add it last to protect the ice.

Shake hard for 15-20 seconds — longer than you think, the foam depends on it.

Strain into your glass. The foam will follow.

No garnish required. Three coffee beans if you want to be traditional about it.

A note on the recipe

The Amaro Nonino adds a bitter herbal note that keeps it from being sweet, and the Grand Marnier adds a citrus warmth that works with the coffee in a way that's hard to explain until you taste it.

Use good espresso and coffee liqueur. It's most of the drink.
